Frequently asked questions

WHAT IS TITLE 24 ACCEPTANCE TESTING AND WHY DO I NEED IT FOR MY PROJECT?

Title 24 Testing is the certification of a projects lighting control system and state submission of an Acceptance Testing report by a Certified Technician & Acceptance Testing Contractor. The certification ensures that the lighting control system is designed, installed, and programmed correctly to satisfy the Title 24 Part 6, Non-Residential building code.

WHAT ARE LIGHTING CONTROLS?

Lighting controls are systems and devices that regulate the operation of lighting to improve energy efficiency, convenience, and performance. These controls include manual switches, dimmers, occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting systems, timers, and networked lighting control systems. They help optimize energy use by adjusting lighting levels based on occupancy, daylight availability, or user preferences. In commercial settings, lighting controls play a key role in meeting energy codes, such as California’s Title 24, by ensuring compliance with efficiency standards and reducing unnecessary energy consumption.

TYPES OF LIGHTING

  • Occupancy / Motion / Vacancy Sensors
  • Astronomical Time Clocks
  • Bypass Timers
  • Daylight Harvesting Sensors
  • Photocells
  • Low / Line Voltage Dimming Switches
  • Programable Wall Pods
  • Lighting Control Panels
  • Etc..

WHAT TYPES OF PROJECTS REQUIRE TITLE 24 ACCEPTANCE TESTING?

  • New Build / T.I.
  • Restaurants
  • Bars
  • Schools
  • Dental
  • Medical
  • Office / Warehouse
  • Retail
  • Auto Dealerships
  • Gyms

TITLE 24 CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE FORMS

NRCA-LTI-02-A Lighting Controls
NRCA-LTI-03-A Automatic Daylighting Controls
NRCA-LTI-04-A Demand Responsive Lighting Controls
NRCA-LTI-05-A Institutional Tuning PAF
NRCA-LT0-02-A Outdoor Lighting Controls

  • Must be completed by a certified technician prior to receiving your Certificate of Occupancy for your project
  • An electronic copy will be submitted to the State/City and a PDF copy will be provided to the customer to have present during the final inspection
  • These reports are what most city inspectors refer to when they request Title 24 certification aka "Acceptance Testing"

WHO CAN PROVIDE TITLE 24 ACCEPTANCE TESTING?

Title 24 Lighting Acceptance Testing must be conducted by a Certified Lighting Acceptance Test Technician (ATT), who is trained and certified through an approved Acceptance Test Technician Certification Provider (ATTCP) recognized by the California Energy Commission (CEC). These technicians verify that installed lighting controls and systems comply with California’s Title 24, Part 6 Building Energy Efficiency Standards. Additionally, an Acceptance Test Employer (ATE) must oversee and employ certified ATTs to perform the testing. This requirement ensures that lighting control systems function properly, improving energy efficiency and code compliance.
